Addis Art Gallery in Los Angeles Presents Paintings by Mekbib Gebertsadik & Meseret Desta
Mekbib Gebertsadik & Meseret Desta
Learn more about the artists at BLEN ART SHOW.
Mekbib received his BFA with distinction from Addis Abeba University of Fine Arts, with a broad emphasis on painting and illustration in all media. Subsequently, he added to his repertoire a degree in graphic design, including internet technologies and software programs. Mekbib has exhibited extensively in Ethiopia and other countries prior to coming to the United States with his wife, Meseret, in 2001. Mekbib has created art his entire life. Upon completing his higher education, Mekbib worked as a full-time studio artist, winning an international competition in 2000 in the Netherlands called, The Reason to Love the Earth. His work concentrates on African motifs and traditions, both in color palette and technique. Making use of two-dimensional imagery and generous textural application, Mekbib intentionally references traditional African art forms, contributing to the establishment of a movement he calls, “Africanism.”
Meseret graduated with honors from the Addis Abeba University of Fine Arts where she concentrated on mural art. After several exhibitions to her credit in Addis Abeba and abroad, Meseret moved to the United States to study graphic arts, web design, and animation. Since then, her work has been included in several exhibitions in the Washington, D.C. area. Meseret is a passionate colorist, using a palette that allows the eye of each viewer to mix the colors uniquely. She intends her paintings to exist in a liminal world that eases the distinctions between physical, intellectual, and spiritual spheres.
Exhibition: February 24–March 27, 2007 • Receptions: Saturday, February 24, 6–10 pm; Sunday, February 25, 2–7 pm. The artists will be present.

Angels of Light: Ethiopian Art from the Walters Art Museum
March 23—May 20, 2007
Acquired largely since 1993, the collection of Ethiopian icons, manuscripts, and bronze processional crosses of the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore is today one of the largest and finest collections outside of Ethiopia itself. Historically, Ethiopia was a Christian kingdom with strong ties in both trade and religion to the cultures located around the Mediterranean. By the fifteenth century, this African nation had developed a tradition of icon-painting that rivaled the Orthodox empires of Byzantium and Russia, as well as the famed panel paintings of Renaissance Italy. That Ethiopian artists were aware of these other traditions is made apparent in their choice of religious subjects, such as Saint George on horseback or Mary with the Christ Child, which were adapted from Byzantine or Italian models. Nevertheless, a survey of Ethiopian art—from crosses to icons to manuscripts—makes it clear that, over time, Ethiopian artists transformed their models and infused their works with a unique sense of form and color. Angels of Light: Ethiopian Art from the Walters Art Museum features approximately 40 highlights (icons, manuscripts, bronze processional crosses, etc.) from the Walters’ permanent collection, including recent acquisitions. A comprehensive publication, Ethiopian Art (2001), featuring scholarly essays by Kelly M. Holbert, Assistant Curator for Medieval Art,Walters Art Museum, Getatchew Haile, Hill Monastic Manuscript Library, St. John’s University, and Jacques Mercier, CNRS, Ethnology and Comparative Sociology Laboratory, University of Paris-X, serves as a companion volume to the exhibition.
